When CELPIP results arrive and how re-evaluation works
Paragon Testing Enterprises sets how long CELPIP exam results take and how to request a re-evaluation (rescoring). Both rules can change, so confirm them below or on CELPIP’s official website before planning around a date.
Check the current results timing and re-evaluation rules on the official site
The test owner sets these rules and can change them. Read them on the official CELPIP website before you pay.
Only the test owner issues official results. No practice site, this one included, can show, check or change them.
What your CELPIP test results show
A separate CELPIP level for listening, reading, writing and speaking, up to 12, with no overall pass or fail. Express Entry scores them separately, so a single weak area matters even when the other three are strong.
Listening and reading reflect how many scored questions you got right; writing and speaking reflect what raters made of your answers.
In listening and reading, Paragon’s score guide groups correct answers into overlapping bands, so one count can fit two levels. That is why practice estimates come as a range. A practice range of 8–9 is no promise of 9.
What an M on your CELPIP results means
An M means a level below 3. Paragon’s score guide uses M for its lowest band, which in listening covers roughly 7 or fewer correct answers out of 38.
Any level below 4, M included, has no CLB equivalent in IRCC’s chart, so that skill earns no CRS language points in Express Entry.
Treat an M as a signal to rebuild basics before test technique. In listening, practise one part at a time, reading its transcript after each try. In writing, cover every point a prompt lists, with at least 150 words.
Turn your CELPIP results into CLB levels and CRS points
IRCC reads CELPIP 4 to 10 as CLB 4 to 10: a 9 in speaking is CLB 9 in speaking. Anything from 10 to 12 counts as CLB 10+, so a 12 earns exactly what a 10 earns.
Enter all four results to see their CLB equivalents and CRS language points, single or with a spouse or partner.

- WritingCLB 88
- SpeakingCLB 99
2 skills below CLB 9: Reading, Writing
These levels earn 108 CRS language points
Levels are CELPIP levels; CELPIP 4–10 count as the same CLB levels. For information only, not immigration advice.
For example, listening 9, reading 8, writing 7 and speaking 9 give CLB 9, 8, 7 and 9: 102 CRS language points without a spouse or partner. Raising that writing 7 to a 9 would add 14.
Gains flatten near the top: without a spouse or partner, CLB 9 brings 31 points per ability; CLB 10+ brings 34. Language also feeds skill transferability points: with a post-secondary credential of one year or more, CLB 7 or higher across the board adds 13, while CLB 9 across the board adds 25. Our CELPIP score chart lists every level side by side.
Why official results can differ from practice
A practice estimate is a range from our tools, not an official score. Your official result may land above or below it, for reasons such as these:
- Different topics. A subject you know well can lift a practice score; an unfamiliar one on test day can pull it down.
- Nerves and fatigue. Practice at home rarely feels like a full sitting at a centre, with strict timers from start to finish.
- Reading a range as one number. A practice range of 8–9 means somewhere in that band, so plan around its lower end.
- Too few practice results. One mock is a snapshot. Two or three in a row give a steadier picture.
- Pausing and replaying. Practice lets you stop and listen again; on test day every recording plays once and no timer waits for you.
How long CELPIP results are valid
CELPIP test validity is 2 years: once results expire, any application asking for language results needs a fresh test.
Express Entry language points come straight from these results, so plan around their expiry:
- Note your expiry date next to your profile details.
- Check IRCC’s current rules on when results must still be valid for your program.
- If your results could expire before you apply, book a new test early enough for fresh results to arrive in time.
If one skill is below your target
Work on that skill alone, measure it again, then rebook. Skills already at target show you what not to spend time on.
- Listening
Practise part by part
Drill one part at a time, then convert correct answers on our listening score chart.
- Reading
Read against a clock
Give each part only its own minutes, then check your level on our reading score chart.
- Writing
Compare, then get a check
Study our writing sample answers at levels 7, 9 and 11, then get a practice estimate from our writing checker.
- Speaking
Record yourself
Listen to our speaking sample answers, then answer the same task against a timer to hear the difference.
Once the weak area reaches target in practice, confirm it with a free mock test before you rebook. If a level surprised you, read re-evaluation rules on CELPIP’s official website before choosing between a re-evaluation and a retake.
