CLB 8 on CELPIP
CLB 8 on CELPIP means a CELPIP level of 8 in a skill, which Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) treats as Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) 8. In listening that takes about 30–33 correct answers out of 38, in reading about 28–31; in writing or speaking, answers that back every point with a reason or detail. Each 8 is worth 23 Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) points if you are single.
What CLB 8 in CELPIP means
On CELPIP-General, an 8 in listening is CLB 8 in listening; reading, writing and speaking work alike. CELPIP scores them from 0 to 12, and IRCC reads 4 to 10 as identical benchmark levels. So a CLB 8 equivalent is simply an 8.
Eight sits between two thresholds. Skill transferability points begin once every result reaches 7 and move up a column once every result reaches 9; an 8 changes neither. On the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR), CELPIP 8 sits midway through B2, which spans 7 to 9.
CLB 8 CELPIP score in each skill
- listeningCELPIP 830–33 of 38About 30 to 33 correct answers out of 38.
- readingCELPIP 828–31 of 38About 28 to 31 correct answers out of 38.
- writingCELPIP 8CELPIP 8Covers every point with a reason or a detail, in a clearly organized answer. Vocabulary fits the reader with some range, and errors are few and minor.
- speakingCELPIP 8CELPIP 8Gives organized ideas with reasons and an example, at a steady pace with only short pauses, using everyday vocabulary with some precision.
Listening and reading ranges come from Paragon’s published approximate guide, in our exam configuration. Writing and speaking are rated on four criteria; see the writing and speaking sample answers.
Level 8’s band overlaps both of its neighbours, so a practice range starts at 8 only near its top, as our reading score chart shows count by count:
| Skill | Level 8 band | Also in level 7’s band | Also in level 9’s band | First count with a range at 8 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Listening | 30–33 | 30–31 | 33 | 32 (6 misses at most) |
| Reading | 28–31 | 28 | 31 | 30 (8 misses at most) |
To reach 8 in writing or speaking, work on development: give every point a reason or a detail, then organize an answer so a reader never has to guess what comes next.

IRCC counts CRS points per ability, its word for each skill. An 8 is worth 23 per ability if you are single, 22 if your spouse or common-law partner is coming too: 92 or 88 across four. Over a 7, that is +6 each, or +24 in total.
Going on to 9 pays more than reaching 8 did: 9 adds 8 per ability if you are single (or 7 if a partner comes too), 32 across four.
What CLB 8 leaves unchanged: skill transferability
Skill transferability points pair language with education or foreign work experience. An 8 shares a 7’s column, “CLB 7 or higher in all four, one or more below 9”, so lifting every result to 8 raises per-ability points but leaves these where they were. Only 9s across the board move them.
| Results | Per-ability points | Plus a master’s or professional degree | Plus 3+ years of work abroad |
|---|---|---|---|
| Four 7s | 68 | 25 | 25 |
| Four 8s | 92 | 25 | 25 |
| Four 9s | 124 | 50 | 50 |
Read down that table: going 7 to 8 moves only per-ability points; going 8 to 9 moves all three columns.
Mixed results around 8
Results may differ by skill. Three cases for a single applicant:
- Listening 9, reading 8, writing 8, speaking 8: 100 per-ability points; transferability stays in its lower column because three results are under 9.
- Listening 9, reading 9, writing 8, speaking 9: 116 points, yet still that lower column: a single 8 is enough to hold it there.
- Four 9s: 124 points, and its higher column applies.
Each result lifted to 9 adds 8 per-ability points, but a transferability jump waits for your last one. With three 9s already, a fourth is worth most: if you hold a master’s degree or an entry-to-practice professional degree, it brings 33 points at once.

Writing and speaking: one answer at 7, 8 and 9
An 8 supports every point. Here is one survey answer, about choosing an evening or a weekend class at a community centre, written to three levels:
- Level 7
A choice plus a general reason
I choose the evening class. It is better for me because the time is good. I like evening classes.
- Level 8
Reasons tied to a writer’s life
I would choose the evening class, because I finish work at five and could get there without rushing. It would also let me practise with people from my own neighbourhood, which I have wanted to do since we moved.
- Level 9
A specific example that proves each reason
I would pick the evening class. My shift ends at five, so I could walk over from the clinic and still keep Saturdays for my son’s hockey games. Since we moved in March, I have only spoken to the neighbour who lent us a ladder, and a weekly class on my street would change that.
- At 8, “the time is good” becomes a real schedule, and a second reason adds something new.
- At 9, each reason gets a concrete case: a shift, a hockey game, one neighbour.
- Linking words such as “because”, “also” or “so” hold both higher versions together.
Spoken answers at 8 sound organized and steady: a clear answer, a reason, an example, only short pauses. Compare full written answers at three levels in our writing sample answers.
Next steps toward 9
Level 9’s band starts 3 correct answers higher in listening, and 3 higher in reading. For a range that starts at 9, misses allowed shrink from 6 to 3 in listening and from 8 to 5 in reading.

Weigh what a 9 is worth to you
Four 9s add 32 per-ability points (single), plus a higher transferability column if you have education or work experience it pairs with. Check your full profile with IRCC’s official tools.

Start with whichever result is furthest from 9
Pick it using a recent full test, then give it most of your practice time.

Add detail to writing and speaking
A 9 needs a concrete case behind every point. Our speaking templates give all 8 tasks a structure with room for one.
Our CLB 9 page covers that level in full.
