CLB 9 in CELPIP: the scores you need in each skill
CLB 9 in CELPIP means a CELPIP level of 9 in a skill, which Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) treats as Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) 9. It takes about 33–35 correct answers out of 38 in listening, 31–33 in reading, plus writing or speaking whose points are developed through specific examples. Four 9s earn 124 Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) points for a single applicant, and they move skill transferability points into their higher column.
What CLB 9 in CELPIP means
CELPIP scores every section from 0 to 12; IRCC treats 4 to 10 as matching benchmark levels. A CLB 9 CELPIP equivalent is therefore a 9 in the same section: 9 in listening is CLB 9 in listening.
Above 9 come 3 more levels, 10, 11 and 12, which Express Entry counts as one: CLB 10+. On the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR), 9 sits at the top of B2, whereas 10 is C1.

Listening and reading ranges come from Paragon’s published approximate guide, in our exam configuration. Writing and speaking are rated on four criteria; see the writing and speaking sample answers.
Level 9 has the narrowest band from level 7 up on both charts: 3 counts in listening (33–35), 3 in reading (31–33). Both edges overlap a neighbour, so a practice range starting at 9 needs 35 right in listening, which allows at most 3 misses. Reading needs 33, allowing 5. Our listening score chart shows a range for every count.
In writing or speaking, 9 is where answers stop being merely complete. They become specific: every point carries a concrete example, words suit a particular reader, ideas link smoothly.

A 9 earns 31 per skill if you are single, or 29 if your spouse or common-law partner is coming with you: 124 or 116 in total. Compared with an 8, a 9 adds 8 points per skill if single, or 7 with a partner.
Above 9, this table flattens: CLB 10+ adds only 3 per skill, so 9s everywhere already earn 124 of 136 possible first-language points (single).
All four at CLB 9: a higher transferability column
Skill transferability points reward strong language combined with education or foreign work experience. Their higher column needs 9 or above everywhere; an 8 anywhere keeps you in its lower column, whatever your other three results are.
| Combined with | At 7–8 in all four | At 9+ in all four | Added by 9s |
|---|---|---|---|
| A post-secondary credential of one year or longer | 13 | 25 | +12 |
| Two or more post-secondary credentials, one of three years or longer | 25 | 50 | +25 |

In 4 of 6 rows, 9s exactly double those points. They come on top of the 32 points that four 9s add over four 8s (single).

How to get CLB 9 in CELPIP
Getting all 9s means four separate targets. Train them in turn, letting practice ranges, not single numbers, show when you are ready.

Measure every section
Take our free mock test in one sitting. Listening and reading are scored on the spot; sign-up gives you 3 free AI grades for writing or speaking.
- 2
Listening: reach 35 correct in practice
That is where this site’s range starts at 9. Train parts where several people talk, such as the Part 6 viewpoints set, with one play per recording.
- 3
Reading: reach 33 correct in practice
Each part has its own timer, so pace matters as much as understanding. Practise Part 4, which has reading’s longest timer at 13 minutes, until you finish with a minute to spare.
- 4
Writing: make every point specific
Support each point with a concrete detail, picking precise words for your reader. Run a draft through our writing checker to get a practice estimate.
- 5
Speaking: fill the time, add an example
Finish close to your time limit, giving one specific example in every answer. Our speaking checker gives a practice estimate too.
- 6
Book when every range starts at 9
Practice estimates are not official scores, so give yourself a margin: wait until every practice range starts at 9.
In speaking, the step from 8 to 9 can come down to one specific detail. Two answers to a friend who asks whether to buy a new or used car:
I’d look for a used car with full service records, maybe three or four years old. You’d avoid its steepest drop in value, and whatever you save could cover your first year of insurance.
I think you should buy a used car, because it costs less and you can save money for other things, like insurance. Just ask a mechanic to check it first.
- Precise details carry the advice: service records, a car three or four years old.
- Each detail brings a payoff: less lost value, money left over for insurance.
- Contractions such as “I’d” keep it natural to listen to.
A level 9 answer on each of the four criteria
Raters score writing and speaking on 4 criteria each. This is what our model answers written to level 9 do on every one of them:
| Criterion | Writing at 9 | Speaking at 9 |
|---|---|---|
| Content and coherence | Each point developed through a specific example, in a clear order | A clear position, reasons in a logical order, one concrete example |
| Vocabulary | Precise words that suit a reader; little repetition | Precise everyday words plus a few natural expressions |
| Readability / Listenability | Clear paragraphs, smooth linking, very few errors | A steady pace, clear pronunciation, few fillers such as “um” |
| Task fulfillment | Every part of a prompt answered, in a fitting tone, within 150–200 words | Nearly all of its speaking time used, talking to whoever a task names |
Is CELPIP 9 a good score?
The facts, without opinion: CELPIP 9 is level 9 on a scale that ends at 12. It equals CLB 9; Paragon aligns it with CEFR B2 for comparison. In Express Entry, it earns 31 of a possible 34 points per skill (single), and 9s in every skill also open the higher transferability column.
Whether 9 is enough depends on your program and the rest of your profile. Check IRCC’s official tools or a licensed representative before you decide.
What CLB 10+ adds over a 9
CELPIP 10, 11 and 12 all count as CLB 10+, worth 34 points a skill if single: 3 more than a 9. Transferability has no column above 9, so this step adds 12 points across all four.
Listening’s top band starts at 35 correct (a range from 10 needs 36); reading’s starts at 33 (a range from 10 needs 34).

- listeningTrain multi-speaker parts with one playThis site’s range starts at 9 from 35 correct, so a few missed details decide it. Practise the discussion part without replaying.
- readingPractise Part 4 under its timerNote each writer’s opinion before you answer, and pace yourself across its 13 minutes, the longest timer in reading.
- writingAdd one specific detail per pointLevel 8 answers cover each point. Level 9 answers prove each one with a concrete detail.
